Blog Definition Getting the Basics Right

posted in List Marketing |

If you want to start blogging, one of the first steps you need to take is to arrive at a complete blog definition through a blog guide. What does it really mean and is this really something you’re ready to get into? In today’s day and age, it isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

What it Meant

The word blog is essentially an abbreviation of web blog. In their earliest form, blogs were really just online journals and diaries, documenting the thoughts and opinions of their authors. The fact that by nature, these online journals were built to arrange articles chronologically supported the intention of various platforms serving as journals.

From the very start, blogs were also intended to have updates on a scheduled manner and had options for viewers to receive information on these updates. This is mainly what made blogs a lot different from websites

As time passed, blogs came to carry more than just personal thoughts or ideas. A lot of bloggers began to write about real world events or published tutorials about various topics of interest. This was a major turning point that made bloggers part of what was then tagged as new media.

Growth of Blogging

For the longest time, dates and regular updates were a must for typical blogs. This is no longer the case. There are now thousands of blogs whose authors intentionally remove references to dates. This is to simulate a more evergreen web property that’s a lot like sites. Also, there are now some platforms that webmasters use primarily for static content management, thereby eliminating some qualities of traditional blogs.

One other change that has transpired in the world of blogging is the current use of blogs as marketing vehicles. Many business owners now use blogs to provide fresh information to customers and readers. Naturally, such pieces of information carry intentions to sell or promote products and services.

Because web marketing is naturally a competitive and tough field, some companies choose to run several different blogs with the intention of building both reputation and links for mother sites. Those who grew up harboring traditional notions of blogging as a personal tool may not see this as a favorable development.

Obstacles and Hurdles

A lot of new bloggers don’t think about the possible difficulties and obstacles to starting their own journals. It’s important to keep in mind though that it isn’t always peaches and cream. There are now so many concerns you’d need to tackle including choosing among the hordes of publishing platforms available.

Even when you’ve managed to choose the best platform available, there is still the challenge of figuring out and surviving various technical steps and issues. If you can’t afford to hire a good hand to help you out, you’d have to learn everything on your own. That’d mean hours of reading tutorials and trail and error.

After you’ve got a blog up, the next step is to promote and build a following. This can even be tougher than learning about servers and plugins. This is especially if you don’t have a naturally large social circle, the members of which share the interests you write about.

There is no doubt that you will love blogging. This does not mean it’ll be the easiest venture for you. Keep in mind that blogging is not for everyone so before you decide to start a blog, you’ve got to make the extra effort of finding out what it’s all about and if it’s something you’d want to stick to for the long run.
