Encourage Other People To Be Giving By Setting A Good Example

posted in Off-line Marketing |

The owner of the largest grocery store in town was determined to get as much advertising as possible from everything he sold. He developed his own line of packaged products which ranged from home baked pies using the name of his grandmother and his great aunt. He even had wine produced with his very own label and picture on it that was excellent wine and recognized by everyone in the area as a brilliant move on his part. So, it was no surprise that this grocer also wanted to make a statement when it came to the point of sale, and he accomplished this with the use of complimentary reusable carryout bags with his grocery logo and name on them. He also had company bags designed for taking towels and suntan lotion to the beach, holding clothes and shoes when going to the fitness center, or toting books home from the library that he gave to his employees so that when they did anything around town the name of his grocery store was prominently displayed.

The generosity of this grocer was very surprising also. He delighted in presenting the homeless shelters with day old baked goods from his bakery section and fresh meat and fish that was getting close to their expiration dates was always welcomed there as well. He made sure that everything he gave away was something that he himself would consider worthy of eating. With this kind of caring, his generosity was soon talked about and admired by his contemporaries. He soon discovered that he was able to convince other business owners to follow his lead and he led the way in making donations to the local homeless shelters and food pantries. Many of these business owners had long wanted to be a part of helping out in their neighborhoods but there was not a venue established to make it possible. They soon found out that together they could make quite an impact on their community. Something that really took off was an annual, “Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” effort that was held at the large community center in town. Young people were asked to contribute toys or clothes that were still in good condition and they were then treated to popcorn and a free movie. Adults brought anything from home that was still usable and in good shape and were asked to donate money also. Local businesses made donations that consisted of small appliances, hardware items, and cleaning supplies that were always needed at the homeless shelters. A list of “wished for” items was posted from the people who were currently staying at the shelter:

• Books and magazines: Books and magazines went a long way to distract folks who were waiting to hear from recent job interviews or who were caring for ill family members.

• Board games and puzzles: Providing some normal family activities such as games and puzzles was a big deal to anyone with children.

• Toiletry items: Combs and brushes, deodorant, shampoo and soap were constantly being used and always in short supply.
