The Effectivity OF Subliminal Video

posted in Off-line Marketing |

Let’s begin at the best place to start; the beginning. In 1956, the whole idea of subliminal messaging began with the famous cinema experiment conducted by James Vicary. He claimed to have influenced movie-goer’s buying habits with the use of subliminal video he had place into the movie reels. Using this example is quite pointless now, because in 1962, Vicary came forward and admitted that he had fabricated the whole experiment. Not only did he falsify the results, but the entire “mind control” experiment was a hoax.

What about subliminal Cd and MP3 tapes? They must work, right? Actually the evidence that supports subliminal audio tapes is even less conclusive than for subliminal video ads. One specific experiment involved participants who listened to personal development messages for thirty days, and at the end of thirty days their progress was reviewed. It was concluded that there was no real difference in the individual’s attitudes or behaviors. It appears that the results for audio messages tend to mirror those for video. There is not much more evidence that subliminal messages in any form actually do what they say they can do, and yet the companies and sales people still try to make you think otherwise.

Of course there have been some positive results, so what about those? It’s not all smoke and mirrors or even doom and gloom for sublimated messaging. There have been a few small experiments that have yielded positive results, but there are some clear guidelines on how to be successful when targeting subliminal messages to consumers. It is the meaning in the message that is important and should be limited to just a single word. Phrases, sentences and complex statements are simply lost; a repeating image or word is the most effective.

The biggest influence on an individual is not the subliminal message itself, but the attitude of the consumer. It has been found that subliminal messages that target a person’s current state are much more effective than general messages. An example would be someone who is thirsty. This person will be more influenced by a message for a drink than someone who isn’t thirsty at all. What this means is that if you are already mentally prepared for success, then self-help sublimated video and audio messages will work.

At the end of the day, your mental attitude will count for far more than the content of these video or audio programs. If you do want to go down the path of subliminal video or audio, then spend your money wisely and chose something that you will feel comfortable with and is tailored to your specific interests, or better still, spend your cash on things that have been proven to work; like psychotherapy or hypnosis.
