The Detroit Red Wings are one of the NHL’s first six franchises and were established in the fall of 1926 when a Detroit based association purchased the National Hockey League for a sum of $100,000, with players from the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League. They begun by naming the club the Detroit Cougars and in point played their first season across the river in Windsor, Ontario. They swept the Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup finals to win their second consecutive Stanley Cup.
