Does Your Site Appeal to International Audiences?

posted in Bricks and Mortar Business |

It’s often during a downturn that business people realise they’ve got to branch out to get more clients. One thing you may have overlooked is to get your website seen by audiences in other countries. By optimising your site in this way, you’re likely to bring a lot more customers (in possibly less competitive markets) to your offering.

In the world today, there are now fewer native english speakers than non-native ones. Those are probably the most obvious customers to target first.

But there is a slight problem here – many of those who speak English as a non-native language are still learning. That means they may not understand everything you have to say in your sales pitch. It’s important to make sure then, that you optimise your website for those visitors. Be sure to keep your language simple and avoid using too much jargon or slang.

Another way of approaching the problem might be to create a brand new, localised site that offers information tailored to the country you’re targetting. You might also choose to show your cultural credentials by including country-specific information on your new site.

To go even further, a site that is serious about attracting customers in other countries could opt for a full site translation. In order for this to be successful, each page will have to be translated by hand, which will almost certainly involve the services of a professional translator.

The compromise solution is to translate only part of your website. Otherwise, an email marketing campaign in another language might be a slightly easier solution to implement and could also pay dividends.
